Abstract
879,323. Regulating fluid flow; siphons. SMETHURST, G. Sept. 22, 1959 [June 28, 1958], No. 20779/58. Classes 69 (1) and 135. A liquid flow control device comprises an inverted U-tube immersed in a liquid with one end open to the liquid and the other end open to a region of lower pressure, means being provided for introducing into the tube pressurized air in order to create an air lock therein, and means for breaking the air lock. As shown, a number of U-tubes are formed in a tower 2 immersed in a reservoir 1 of water, the inlets A, B, C, D, E of the tube leading into a common outlet 3. A compressor 5 for supplying the air is connected via pipes 6, 7 to a point 8 in each of the U-tubes, a shut-off valve 10 and a bleed-valve 11 being provided in each pipe line; a main valve 9 is also provided. When the air in any one of the U-tubes is bled-off, water flows away at a rate governed by the head above the particular inlet chosen.
