Purifying liquids.-In water-softening and purifying apparatus, the reagent measuring gear c, d is enclosed within a closed container b under air or gas pressure, which is utilized to discharge the treated water from the treating-tank a to the storage tank f or other situation. A ball cock k closes the delivery pipe e to the tank f before sufficient water has passed to unseal its lower end. According to one arrangement, a ball cock m controls the flow of water to the tank f, and when this cock is closed, the increasing gas pressure in the tank a due to inflowing water acts upon a diaphragm n to close a valve h in the water-supply pipe g. According to another arrangement, the valve m is omitted and the supply pipe g is controlled directly by a float in the tank f. To maintain pressure in the tank a, air may be injected with the water. The reagent tank p has an inlet valve q, which is closed before a valve r is opened to pass reagent to the container b ; or reagent under pressure may be supplied by a ball cock.
