GAS-REGU LATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,134. dated May 12, 1885 7 Application filed February 19, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. GorHnEN, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Farmington, in the count-y of Franklin and State of Maine, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Gas-Regulators, of which the following is a specification, reference be ing had therein to the accompanying drawlugs.

The object of my invention is to automatically regulate the flow and pressure of gas to burners, and at the same time provide for allowing the water or other fluids resulting from condensation in the regulator to escape by a siphon-drip, as will be fully understood from the following description, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings.
Before describing my invention I will state that I am aware of many automatic floating devices which have been arranged in chambers through which gas is allowed to pass, regulated by a valve connected to such devices, mercury and other like fluids being employed as a fluid cut-off in connection with a valve.
It will be observed from what I will hereinafter explain that I employ a floating valve in combination with three chambers-to wit, a fluid-pressure chamber, a valvular chamber, and a siphon-drip chamber.
The following is a description of my invention, which is fully illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which-- A designates the case or shell of my improved gas or fluid regulator. This case is rectangular in shape, and it is subdivided by two vertical partitions, a a forming three compartments, A A A The compartment A has a feed-inlet, a, on top, properly closed 1 by a cap or its equivalent, but preferably not air-tight.
At the lower end of the partition or vertical diaphragm a is a space, ad, which establishes a fluid communication between the compartment A and the compartment A The compartment A is in communication with the long and short legs of the siphon E should be so gaged and adjusted that all water of condensation, together with other fluids resulting from the condensation of the gas, shall be carried off through the siphon E from chamber A as drip into the chamber A and from thence be conducted away from the regulator through the apparatus.
B designates a pipe which communicates with the meter, andwhich has a seat, I), at its upper end, adapted to receive a valvular portion, I), fixed to a cap, N. This valve b can be made of any suitable material which will not be corroded by carburreted hydrogen gas or any element mixed therewith. The cap I) is connected by posts a to an annular float, (J, which is free to rise and descend in the chamber A said parts being provided with diaphragrmguides c, as clearly shown in the annexed drawings.
The float C may be made of metal, or it may be made of any other suitable material which will serve as a buoy for the valve b and its guides.
At the upper end of the chamber A", and preferably directly above and coincident with the axis of the supply-"pipe B, is the deliverypipe 13', which communicates with the service pipe.
E is a suitable outlet, which may be closed by a cap applied at the upper end of the chamber A for the purpose of allowing the escape of any undue accumulation of air.
The operation of my improved gas-regulator is as follows: I prefer to use as the fluid in my improved gas-regulator glycerine. This is supplied to the chambers A A through the aperture to until a given desired level is and in proportion to the pressure of gas through the supply-pipe B so will be the position of the valve 7) with respect to the seat I). It will thus be seen that by a very simple contrivance I am able to regulate the consumption of gas and have an even or uniform flow of the same, whatever may be the press- 1 vure.
It will also be observed that the Water of condensation and all foreign liquors will pass off through the siphon into the drip-compartmentA and may be drawn off through the outlet E While I have described glycerine as the preferable fluid to be used in my gas-regulator, I do not confine myself thereto, as any other suitable fluid may be used.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new isl. A fluid gas-regulator consisting of a case subdivided into three compartments A A Afithe supply-pipe, its floating valve, and the siphon-drip, substantially as described.
2. The combination, in a fluid gas-regulator, of a case, A, provided with a diaphragm termina-ting at apassage, a, the compartment A having the supply and the delivery pipes 5 and a floating valve therein, and a drip-chan1- ber provided with a siphon and an outlet, substantially as described.
3. The combination, in an automatic gas-regulator, of the chambers A A and a siphondrip chamber with the supply and delivery pipes, a float, and a valve guided by rods, substantially as described.
4. Ina fluid gasregulator, a case subdil vided as described, asupply-pipe, B, an autoi matic float-valve, a delivery-pipe, B, and a 1 compartment provided with a siphon and outi lets, substantially as described. 5. In a gas-regulator having a float-valve applied to the deliverypipe, and two communicating fluid-chambers, an auxiliary chamber provided with a drip or draw-oil inverted siphon, the longest limb of which has a horizontal portion, substantially as described. 6. In a gas-regulator, the combination with the partitioned case A, of a supply-pipe, a float, the horizontal guides therefor, the valve and valve-disk, a siphon in chamber A and a delivery-pipe, substantially as described.
7. A fluid gas-regulatorconsistingof acase, A, subdivided by partitions a a forming three chambers, A A A a float havinga flat guided valve, a supply and delivery pipe, 1 a drip-chamber provided with an inverted siphon and openings E E all constructed and adapted to operate substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
8. In a fluid gas-regulator, a floating valve and a supply and delivery pipe located between chambers A A ,in combination with a siphon and the outlets of the chamber A substantially as described.
