Abstract
698,420. Water supply systems. SIMPSON. J. H. Oct. 17, 1951 [Sept. 4, 1950], No. 21716/50. Class 68(i) To ensure a constant flow at a constant pressure from a conduit, the flow of liquid is throttled at a part upstream of its outlet in accordance with variation of the pressure of the liquid in the conduit between said part and the outlet. In one embodiment, upstream of the outlet is a manually operated regulating valve 2 and upstream of this the means responsive to the variation of pressure, said means being upright, the pipe 6, 9 open to atmospehere and having an elbow connected to a pipe 13 leading to a tank 14. The magnitude of the flow through this pipe is a measure of the pressure within the conduit 1. The tank has an outlet 15 of such a size that, when the conditions in the conduit are as desired, the inflow through pipe 13 is exactly balanced by the outflow through pipe 15. Increase in pressure in or greater flow through conduit 1 causes increased flow through pipe 13, a rise in the level of liquid in the tank and a partial closure of ball-valve regulated valve 16 until the desired conditions are again established. The valve 2 can be omitted. In a second embodiment, pipes 6, 9 and 13 are omitted, the tank being supplied from a valved-tube branched off the conduit and so arranged that, when the desired conditions exist, the tube projects a jet of liquid into a spout on the tank at a rate equal to the outflow of pipe 15. When conditions are below those required, the jet fails to reach the spout so that, as the ball valve sinks in the tank, the valve 16 is further opened.
