Abstract

878,923. Variable-speed gear. LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd., JOSEPH. Dec. 1, 1959 [Dec. 1, 1958], No. 38615/58. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXIII] To maintain a substantially constant relationship between the peripheral speeds of a pair of driver rolls for a glass rolling mill, there is provided an epicyclic mechanism including a pair of rollers 15, 16 in driving engagement with the driver rolls 1, 2 and a planetary pinion carrier 21 angularly movable in response to any deviation from the required relationship between the peripheral speeds of the rolls 1, 2 in combination with a variable output pump 13 driven at a substantially constant speed from an electric motor 14, means such as a servo mechanism 25 for varying the output of the pump in response to angular movements of the pinion carrier 21, and an hydraulic motor 12 driven by motive fluid delivered from the pump 13 and the speed of which determines the speed of one of the rolls 1 with respect to the other roll 2. The epicyclic mechanism comprises a sun pinion 17 connected to the roller 15, a similar pinion 18 connected to the roller 16, an internally toothed annulus 19 in engagement with the pinion 18 and a planetary pinion 20 on the carrier 21 in mesh with the sun pinion 17 and the annulus 19. A second epicyclic mechanism comprises a sun pinion 11 driven from the motor 12, a planetary pinion carrier 5 connected to the roll 1 and carrying a planetary pinion 10 in mesh with the pinion 11, an internally toothed annulus 7 in mesh with the pinion 10 and driven at a substantially constant speed from an electric motor 9 by a pinion 8 and a pinion 6 driven from the annulus 7 and connected to the other roll 2. The first epicyclic mechanism is so arranged that a small variation in the peripheral speeds of the rolls, e.g. 0.1%, will effect a proportionately greater change in the output of the pump 13, e.g. 10% and the second epicyclic mechanism arranged so that the speed of the hydraulic motor will effect a proportionately smaller change in the peripheral speed of the roll 1.
