Apparatus for longitudinally stretching a film web comprises a series of two or more rolls which successively engage the web, each roll of the series being driven at a higher peripheral speed than the preceding roll, each roll in the series being coupled to the next roll in the series by a gear train in which the gear ratio can be adjusted and means being provided to effect this adjustment whereby the second and any successive rolls in the series are each driven by the preceding roll at a peripheral speed the value of which relative to that of the peripheral speed of the preceding roll is predetermined. An epicyclic gear train may be associated with each roller, the outer annulus or the sun of each epicyclic gear train driving the planet wheels of the next following epicyclic gear train. The ratios of the basic transmissions of successive epicyclic gear trains may form an arithmetical progression. The outer annuli or the suns not driving the planet wheels of the next following epicyclic gear train may be connected together and may be drivable with a variable speed of rotation. The outer annulus or the sun of each epicyclic gear train may be formed integrally with a toothed wheel meshing with a driving wheel rigidly attached to the next following. roller.
