729,153. Motor vehicle hydraulic driving gear. HUTCHINSON, G. V. V. Aug. 24, 1953 [Aug. 12, 1952], No. 20228/52. Class 79(2). In a vehicle having wheels driven through a hydraulic pump and hydraulic motors the wheels are made to rotate at the same speed by operation of a dog clutch to lock together two coaxial shafts each geared to one of the wheels. As shown in Fig. 2 the invention is applied to a road roller of the three-roll type, the roll 1 being steerable and the rolls 2 being driven from an internal combustion engine 4. The engine 4 is coupled directly or through reduction gearing to the hydraulic pump 5 which is connected by piping and valves to the hydraulic motors 13, the valves controlling the starting, stopping, reversing and speed of the roller. A pinion 12 on each motor 13 meshes with a gear wheel 11 of one of the shafts 8 which are each gear connected to the respective roll 2. The shafts 8 can be connected by the dog clutch 9, 10 for rotation in unison. In a modification, Fig. 3, the shaft 19 of each motor 13 is connected to the respective shaft 8 through a two-speed gear which comprises pinions 14, 16 clutchable to the shaft 19 and meshing with gears 12A, 15 on a countershaft 18, the gear 12A meshing the gear 11 on the shaft 8. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown) the driving arrangement shown in Fig. 2 is applied to a tandem roller, the engine and pump being arranged transversely of the vehicle. The hydraulic pump may be of constant or variable output.
