Abstract
877,554. Smoke screens. DIGHT, S. R., and SAMBROOK, K. H. Aug. 24, 1945 [May 5, 1944], No. 8539/44. Class 119. Apparatus for producing a smoke screen comprises a steam jet 67 adapted to draw hot gas from a furnace 32, a supply of oil vapourized by the mixture of steam and furnace gases, and means for discharging the final mixture from the funnel F of a ship, so that the oil vapour condenses to form smoke. When steam is admitted to the jet 67 it is also admitted to a cylinder 47 to raise a damper 10 and the hot gases are drawn into the throat tube 22, oil being injected at 70. The oil control valve may be interlocked to prevent premature admission of oil and to ensure that the oil supply is cut off before the steam. The nozzle from which the smoke is discharged is preferably cup-shaped to produce turbulence, Fig. 7, (not shown), so that the heavier oil fractions are discharged with the rest.
