Abstract

876,652. Nickel-plating baths. METAL & THERMIT CORPORATION. Feb. 16, 1960 [April 21, 1959], No. 5511/60. Class 41. Nickel-plating baths containing brightening agents are improved by adding N-vinyl 2- pyrrolidone, in combination with a secondary brightening agent having a sulphone or sulphonic acid group attached to a nuclear C atom of a bromocyclic aromatic ring, e.g. O-sulphobenzaldehyde, 1,3,6-naphthalene trisulphonate, O-sulpho-benzyl alcohol, or alkali metal salts thereof or of sulphonated dibenzothiophene dioxide. Primary brightening agents may also be present, e.g. 2-mercaptobenzimidazole, 5- amino - 2 - mercaptobenzimidazole, 6 - mercaptopurine, or an acetylenic alcohol, e.g. 2- butyrene-1,4-diol or alphaphenyl propynol. Wetting agents, e.g. lauryl sulphate may be added. Copper, iron and steel are referred to as base metals. U.S.A. Specification 2,737,484 is referred to.
