Abstract

876,314. Liquid-ring pumps. JENNINGS, I. C. Jan. 13, 1959 [Sept. 4, 1958], No. 1281/59. Class 110 (1). A liquid-ring suction pump A discharges to a pipe 25 by way of a separating tank B wherein entrained liquid is separated from the gas or liquid being pumped. Water is supplied to the tank B from a main 14 by way of a solenoid valve 16, a hand valve 17, a vacuum break C for preventing back flow into the main, and a U-shaped conduit 20, the water level in the tank being kept constant by means of an overflow 23. The liquid ring of the pump is replenished by water returned from the lowest point of the U-shaped conduit 20 through a pipe 62 and a metering orifice 66 to an annular space 56 which communicates through ports 58, 60 with the inlet ports 38, 40 of the pump. The flow of make-up water to the liquid ring, which is dependent on the difference between the constant head provided by the tank B and the variable pressure at the pump inlet, increases as the pump suction increases and therefore as the demand for make-up water increases.
