Abstract
763,004 Centrifugal separators. NAPIER & SON, Ltd., D. April 19, 1955 [April 26, 1954], No. 12072/54. Class 23 [Also in Group XXVIII] In a separator, particularly for de-aerating liquid from a fuel injection pump, comprising a separator chamber, an air outlet from the upper part of the chamber, a liquid outlet from the lower part of the chamber, and at least one inlet passage which discharges liquid tangentially into the chamber, at least one wall of the passage is resiliently urged towards the other wall to maintain a constant rotary velocity of the liquid within the chamber despite fluctuations in supply of liquid. The chamber 26 has an annular liquid inlet chamber 35, an annular liquid outlet 32, and an air outlet 28. Springs 36, mounted on fixed blocks 37, are arranged to form one wall of the inlet chamber, the inlet passages being formed between the free end of a spring and an adjacent block. The air outlet connects the chamber 26 with a further chamber 29 housing a float 42 carrying a valve member 41 which opens a port 20 when sufficient air has collected in the chamber 29. Liquid from the float chamber passes through a fine screen 43 to a series of ducts 46, 47 on the blocks, and is discharged into the inlet passages to return to the chamber 26. Make-up liquid is supplied tangentially to the chamber 26 by ports 13, the supply of make-up liquid being arranged to maintain a constant pressure in the separator.
