Abstract

1,118,343. Centrifugal pumps. KONINKLIJKE MACHINE FABRIEK GEBR. STORK & CO. N.V. Aug. 31, 1965 [Sept. 1, 1964], No.37222/65. Heading F1C. A vertical centrifugal pump 1 is primed by a liquid-ring pump 5 mounted above it and drawing air from it via a hole 19, channel 20, hole 21, intake chamber 22 and intake port 23. The air is discharged via a discharge port 24, discharge chamber 25 and discharge orifice 26. Liquid discharged by the pump 1 passes via a hole 28, a channel 29 and a weir 33 to a reservoir 30, from which it can pass via a hole 31 into the casing 7 of the liquid-ring pump to replenish the liquid ring. When the pump is stopped, liquid siphons back to the impeller chamber 3 of the centrifugal pump from the liquid-ring pump until the chamber 25 is empty, whereupon air can enter the chamber 3 via port 24, casing 7, port 23, chamber 22, hole 21, channel 20 and hole 19 to break the siphon action. Liquid then remains in the liquid-ring pump nearly to the top of an annular partition 15 and the reservoir 30 remains full up to the top of weir 33. Channel 20 and holes 19, 21 may be omitted, the air then being drawn from the chamber 3 via the annular space between the shaft 4 and the annular partition 15, a clearance 14 and pressure-equalizing passages 18 and thence through a port (not shown) to the chamber 22 and then through the port 23 into the casing 7.
