Abstract

874,057. Spiral stair balusters. BROOKFIELD ART METALS Ltd. March 7, 1960 [March 10, 1959], No. 8212/59. Class 45. [Also in Group X] A spiral staircase comprises, a series of substantially triangular tread plates 2, Fig. 4, each plate having a sleeve 4 adjacent its vertex end for mounting the plates on a newel column 14, Fig. 2, the projecting outer end of each plate being supported by a vertical member 8 and an inclined strut 9 both secured between adjacent upper and lower partly superposed plates 2, and balusters 12 secured to the tread plates 2 to support a handrail 13. The struts 9 extend between the rear edges of adjacent pairs of plates 2, and together with the balusters 12 are secured by means of bolts 11 passing through the members 8 which are of tubular form and through superposed holes 5, 5a in the rear and front outer corners respectively of the plates 2. A stiffening angle or channel 7 is welded along at least the front of the undersurface of each plate 2.
