873,266. Printing machines. ALLER PRESS A. S. May 14, 1958 [July 4, 1957], No. 15469/58. Class 100(2) A damping apparatus for an offset printing machine comprises a damping roller to transfer the wetting liquid directly or indirectly to the plate cylinder, and a supply roller which dips into a bath of the liquid and which is arranged to be rotated at such a speed that it throws the liquid centrifugally against the damping roller, the supply roller not being in contact with the damping roller. The supply roller 14 is contained in a box 22 of which the lower part 18 constitutes a container for the liquid 16. A perforated plate 20 is fastened to the periphery of the roller 14 so that when the roller is rotated in an anticlockwise direction, the drive being taken through a variable speed gear, it picks up liquid 16 and throws it outwards by centrifugal force. Some of the liquid so thrown passes out of the box 22 through a slot 24 and moistens the surface of the damping roller 12 which rotates in contact with the plate cylinder 10. The liquid which does not pass through the slot 24 runs down the sides of the box back into the container 18. One edge of the slot 24 is constituted by a number of shutters 26 arranged side-by-side and individually adjustable, so as to widen or narrow the slot, by means of screws such as 28. One end of the container 18 is defined by a low wall 44 which the liquid 16 can overflow, the liquid being fed into the container by a pipe 50 having a valve 52 and which discharges the liquid between two plates 54. The box 22 is pivoted at 34 and its inclination can be varied by means of a screw 38; in this way the level of the liquid 16 in relation to the roller 14 can be regulated. A fixed tray 46 having an outlet 48 is disposed beneath the box 22 and receives liquid which flows over the wall 44 or is otherwise spilled from the apparatus. A wooden lath 56 positioned below the surface of the liquid 16 keeps the surface of the liquid calm.
