MACHINE FOR APPLYING PASTE TO LABELS, &c.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented oet. 1,1912.
Application led August 12, 1910. Serial No. 576,893.
To all whom it may concern: j
Be it known that I, ADOLPH Po'rnnvrN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new Applying Paste to Labels, &c., of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a machine for applying adhesive substance to labels or the like; my objectherein bein to provide an apparatus of simple and e cient construction and operation whereby the uniform application of the adhesive substance to the lower surface of the labels shall be expeditiously effected, and the removal of the labels from the machine facilitated. i
Accordingly my invention comprises various novel features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a front elevat-ion of a machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan thereof, with certain parts broken away. Fig. 3 is an end view, with the driving gear partially broken away. Fig. 4 isa transverse vertical section, as on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1, showing a label as passing through and from the machine. 4
1 designates a suit-able receptacle adapted to contain the adhesive substance in liquid tstate. This receptacle is provided with 0ppositely-inclined cover plates 2, 3, between and above which extends a gum or paste 'aplplying roll 4 which is mounted to rotate within the t-ank and carry upwardy therefrom-the liquid contents. The roll is herein shown as provided with trunnions which are removably seated in slots in the ends of the receptacle, one of the trunnions being conveniently equipped with an ordinary crank handle` 5 to facilitate the operation of rotating theroll.
6 is a scraper or doctor blade to regulate the thickness of gum or paste on the roller. This blade is adjustably mounted on posts 7 rising from the bottom of the receptacle, 'and is provided with depending lugs to which are htted adjusting screws 8 seated in ,the forward wall of the tank. Screw and slot connections 9 between the blade and the respective posts afford a means t'o secure the 10., 11 are two rollers which are rotatably mounted adjacent to and inparallelism with the periphery of thet roll 4, and are respectively provided with , pinions 12, 13 which mesh with a spur wheel 14 on a trunnion of the roll, whereby when the latter is rotated the two rollers are concurrently actuated therewith. The forward roller 10,. which has its bearings in the end walls of the tank, extends adjacent to the inner or rearward edge of the forward cover plate 2 in a'inanner to engage the leading edge of the sheet 0r strip and feed it to and upon the periphery of the roll 4. The roller'll -is mounted above and in rear of the roller 10 and has its bearings in vertically-adjustable slides 15 in the ends of the tank, whereby the roller 11 is adjustable toward and from the roll 4.
rThese slides are fitted to vertical ways in the end walls, and are vertically adjustable therein by means of set-screws 16 extending through suitably disposed brackets on the receptacle. positions of adjustment by means of screws 17 passing through slots 18 in the slides and into the contiguous end walls.
As indicated in Fig. 4, a label (Il) when introduced to the ymachine passes from the roller A10 to the roller 11, and in its passage contacts tangentially or substantially so with the periphery of the Aroll, thereby insuring the uniform-and efficient application of the adhesive substance to and throughout the under surface of the label. By adjusting the roller 11 toward or from the roll 4 I am enabled to com ensate to a nicety for labels of varying thidknesses, to insure their efficient tangential Contact with the roll and thus avoidundue pressure of the roller 11 upon the/sheets. The roller 11, as will be observed from the foregoing, acts as aholding roller for maintaining the labels in contact with the roll 4, while the roller 10 serves to feed the labels to said roll 4 and roller 11.
19 is a series of independently-movable spaced fingers which are adapted to bear with slight pressure upon the top of the roll 4 and immediately in rear of the roller" 11 in a manner to present to the leading ends of the label a row of 11p-standing members 195' which deflect the label upwardly and forwardly from the roll as indicated in Fig. 4. These fingers are provided at their rearward ends with bosses which are loosely mounted on a rod 2O supported in and between the 'Ihe slides are secured in their j label, and asthe fingers each other and are independently movable,
`-their'v action is not suiclentto impair the uniformity of the gummed surface of the label. The fingers may be adjusted along ranged in rear of said rol substance to labels,
apparatus with the gummed face up.
theshaft to accommodate labels of different widths, and moreover if one or more of the fingers should become bent or broken, it or they may be readily removed and another orothers substitutedtherefor.-
v The action of the up-standing members 19 is to deflect, as stated, the gummed labelslup'- wardly and forwardly from the adhesiveapplying roll after .application of the adhesive substance to -the labels, whereby the labels are `delivered toward the frontof the 4B reason of this one attendant is enabledV tg feed'the labels, take them off,`and inspect the gummed surface.
I do .not limit myself to the specific details of constructionherein shown and de- =scribed, but g 1. In an ap aratus -for applying adhesive substance to la els, &c., the`combination with a receptacle, and. a rotatable roll therein, of a pair'of rollers mounted adjacent said rol in advance of the axls thereof and in different horizontal planes, 1 the `lower; of vsaid rollers serving to feed the labels to said roll and the upper roller serving to hold' the labels-in. contact with .the -periphery of the roll and means arfers and over the topv of said roll fordeflecting the labels 11pwardly`and forwardlyfrom the rollv after j' `application of the` adhesive substance to the 45 a labels. j
2. 'In an apparatus for applying adhesive v &c., the combination with `a receptacle, and a lrotatable roll therein, of a pair of rollers mounted adjacent. said roll in advance of the axis thereof and in different horizontal planes, the lower of said rollers serving to feed the labels to said roll with up -stan and' the upper roller servingl to hold the labels in contact with the periphery of the roll, said lower roller being adjustable relatively to saidroll for com ensating for varying thicknesses of labe s, and means arranged in rear of saidl rollers and over the top Jof said roll for deliectin the labels upwardly and forwardly from t e roll after application of the adhesive substance to the labelsI. f 1 dh 3. n an apparatus or app yin a esive substance to labels, &c., the combintion with a receptacle, and a'rotatable roll therein, of a pair of rollers mounted adjacent said roll in advance ofthe axis thereof and in different horizontal lanes, the lower of said rollers serving to eed the labels to said roll and the upper roller serving to hold the labels in contact with the periphery of the roll, and a series of independently-movable fingers mounted over the top of said roll and adjacent the eriphery thereof and provided ding forward portions adapted to bear yieldingly upon the to of said roll.
4. In an apparatus for app ying adhesive substance to labels, &c., the combination with a receptacle, and an adhesivelap lying roll associated therewith, of means or feeding the labels to said roll, and a member supported adjacent the roll and provided with 'means for deflecting the labelsupwardly and forwardly from the roll after application of the adhesive substance to the labels,
, whereby thelabels are delivered toward the front ofthe apparatus with the gummed face up.
5. In an apparatus for applying adhesive substance to labels, &c., the combination with a receptacle, land au adhesive-ap lying'roll associated therewith, of means fp the labels tosaid oll, and a linger mounte adjacent the periphery of the roll and having la label contact portion extending upto eflect .wardly from the roll and adaptedthe labels upwardly and forwardly vafter application of theadhesive sbstance to the labels, whereby the labels are delivered toward the front of the apparatus with the gummed face up.r
