EUGENE H. FRIEDLANDER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
APPARATUS FOR PASTING OR GUMMING LABELS, C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 509,213, dated November 21, 1893.
Application filed October 24; 1892- Serial No. 449,744. (No model.) '7
pasting or gumming labels, & c., embodying a paste or gum applying roller, a feed roller, wipers for removing the surplus material from the applying roller, a reservoir in which the latter roller dips, and novel means for directiug the pasted or gummed labels, &c., from the apparatus.
Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical section of a pasting or gumming apparatus embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a top oroplan view thereof. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of a detached portion.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings :A designates a frame or box, andB designates a gum or paste tank or reservoir supported thereby.
Rising from the sides of the frame are standards 0, on which is mounted the shaft 0' of a felt-covered or other suitable roller D, the latter dipping into the reservoir B, so that its surface is supplied with paste or gum to be applied to the labels, &c. Above said applying roller D is a feed roller E, whose axis F is mounted on the standards 0. I
Pivoted to the frameAinfront of the roller D are fingers G, Whose inner ends rest freely in grooves H in the periphery of said roller D, said fingers forming an inclined platform which leads from the roller to the front of the frame.
J designates rollers which are mounted on the frame A, parallel with the roller D, and alternating with the fingers G, which latter rest freely in grooves between said rollers.
The axis K of the rollers J carries a pulley L, which by means of a belt M, receives motion from a pulley N on the shaft C, it being noticed that the latter may be operated by power or hand.
P designates a table whose edge P forms a wiper, said table being adjustably secured to the top of the frame A, and extends toward the periphery of the rollerD, so thatthe wiper is in contact with or close to said periphery. On the sides of said wiperPare lips Q, which extend closely to the ends of said roller D, and form wipers therefor.
The roller E is formed of a series of disks with blocks alternating therewith, the axis F thereof being squared or angular, and pass- I ing through similar shaped openings in said disks and blocks, the axis carrying a nut, whereby the disks and blocks are clamped together as one, without liability to slip.
The operation is as follows:Power is applied to' shaft 0, whereby the roller D is rotated, and as it dips into the gum or pastein the reservoir B, its periphery is supplied with said material. The labels, &c., are now fed to the roller D and carried through between said roller and the feed roller E, after which they reach the fingers or platform G, down which they are directed and reliably carried off by the action of the rollers J,it being seen that the operation of gumming or pasting the labels, &c., is quick, and effective and con veniently accomplished. The surplus material is removed from the roller D by the wipers P, Q, the same returning to the reservoir. The rollers E and D may be readily removed from the standards 0, owing to the open slots Rin said standards, made for the introduction and displacement of the axis of said roller to and from its bearings thereon. The fingers G may be raised clear of the roller D, to permit'removal of the latter from its bearings.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1. A pasting or gumming machine for 1abels, consisting of a frame with a tank supported thereon, applying and feed rollers j ournaled in standards on said frame, a wiper on said frame, and an inclined pivotal platform resting on the applying roller, said parts being combined substantially as described.
2. In a pasting or gummlng apparatus, an applying roller in combination with a platform pivoted on the frame of the apparatus, and having the inner ends of the fingers contoo feeding rollers mounted on said frame, wipers on the periphery and ends of the applying roller, and a platform leading from the latter, with a discharging roller located in the length of said platform, said parts being combined, forming an improvement in a pasting or gumstituting the same freely entering grooves in said roller, substantially as described.
3. A pasting or gumming apparatus having an applying roller with grooves therein, a pivotal platform consisting of fingers with ends in said grooves, rollers mounted on a gers, and mechanism connecting said applying roller axis and the axis of said iatter mentioned rollers, said parts being combined substantially as described.
4. A frame, a tank thereon, applying and EUGENE H. FRIEDLANDER.
