Abstract
872,810. Sewing machines. PFAFF A.G., G. M. Dec. 18, 1959 [Jan. 9, 1959], No. 43082/59. Class 112 In a sewing machine, movement of a cutting blade from an operative to an inoperative position is accompanied by movement of a guard member from a position outside the path of movement of the blade to a position adjacent the blade and crossing said path. A trimming blade 3, in a post-type machine, is carried by a support member 2 fixed to an oscillatory shaft 1. The latter may be uncoupled from its drive to enable the blade to be swung, by means of a handle 2a, from its operative position, Fig. 1, to an inoperative position, shown in full lines in Fig. 2. A spring 9 connected between the machine frame and a collar 7 clamped adjustably on shaft 1, biases the blade towards the inoperative position. A sleeve 4, journalled on shaft 1 carries a guard member 6. A spring 11, connected between the machine frame and sleeve 4, biases the upper end of the guard member against the machine frame, as shown in Fig. 3, when the blade is in the operative position, the guard member then being positioned below the cutting edge of the blade. When the blade is swung towards the inoperative position the cutting edge first passes over the guard member. A pin 8, carried by collar 7, then engages the guard member to swing the latter with the blade, a fixed pin 14 then co-operating with a cam groove 5 in sleeve 4 to raise the upper end of the guard member to a position above the cutting edge, when the blade has reached the inoperative position.
