Abstract

Class 112 [Also in Group VIII] A sewing machine for closing the mouths of filled bags is provided with a device for severing the thread and, if present, a reinforcing tape, the device comprising a pair of cutting blades which are pivoted together and are normally biased to the open position, one blade being fixed to the machine and the other blade being provided with a handle, upward movement of which serves to close the blades. A blade 4, carried by a block 3 narrower in width than the blade, is secured in a vertical position, by screws 8 to the machine 2 at the outlet end of the latter. A movable blade 11, pivoted at 14 to the upper end of blade 4, has a cranked portion 15 which passes through a horizontal groove 25 in block 3 and is fixed to the inner end of a handle 17. A tension spring 22, connected between blade 4 and handle 17, biases portion 15 against the lower edge of groove 25 to hold the blades open. Upward pressure on handle 17 moves portion 15 against the upper edge of groove 25 and closes the blades. Specification 648,414 and 844,443 are referred to.
