A portable machine for enclosing the mouth of a filled bag with a covering strip and sewing the latter to the bag comprises a sewing head having spaced, depending limbs 40, 41, means for supporting a reel 20 of strip material 19 on said head, a strip-folding guide of inverted U-form carried by a bar 10 attached at one end to said head and provided at the other end with a transverse member 18 over which the strip passes on its way to the folding guide, and means on said head for severing the covering strip when the bag is sealed. The reel 20 is mounted on a spindle 26 carried by a bracket 22. A wire member 28, pivoted to the latter at 29, bears by gravity on the strip to brake its movement. The bar 10, carries two opposed scroll members 11, Fig. 5, formed at their upper edges with flanges 12 which abut bar 10 and are secured thereto by screws 13 which pass through vertical slots 42 in the flanges to provide vertical adjustment of the members 10 for accommodating strip material of different widths. The lower edges of the members 10 are inwardly upturned as at 16 to receive the opposite longitudinal edges of the strip. In a modification, Fig. 7, lugs 34, which support the edges of the strip, are adjustably secured by screws 33 to the scroll members which are integral with a bar 30. In a further modification, the strip edge-supporting lugs are slidably mounted in grooves formed in the scroll members. Specifications 648,414, 872,514 and 882,395 are referred to.
