Abstract
862,697. Sewing machines. UNION SPECIAL MASCHINENFABRIK G.m.b.H. July 15, 1959 [July 23, 1958], No. 24259/59. Class 112 A thread-severing device for a sewing machine 1 comprises cutter blades 3, 4 pivotable about a common displaceable axis 5 and having arms extending beyond the latter, the end of one arm 6 being pivoted about a fixed axis, and the displaceable end of the other arm 7 being connected to an actuating element. As shown, arm 7 is pivoted to one arm of a bell crank lever 9, the other arm of which is connected by a link 13 to the armature 14 of a solenoid 15. Energization of the latter projects the blades 3, 4 upwardly through an opening 2 in the work support and simultaneously closes the blades. On deenergization of the solenoid, the blades are returned to inoperative position by a spring 16. It is stated that the actuating element may be directly connected to said displaceable end. When the device is incorporated in a suspended machine for sewing up the mouths of closed bags, the blade carried by the arm pivoted about a fixed axis is made larger than the other blade for early engagement of the thread to prevent the latter from falling.
