Abstract

863,220. Sewing machines. PFAFF A. G., G. M. Jan, 1, 1958 [Jan. 22, 1957], No. 23/58. Class 112 In a button sewing machine an abutment, disposed in the path of movement of a button clamp-opening lever, is held in a locked position by means of a toggle joint. The movable jaws of a button clamp 19, pivoted at 35, are opened against the action of a spring 34 by the movement of a pin 37 carried by a slidable clamp-opening bar 36. Pin 37 is embraced by one arm of a bell crank lever 40 pivoted at 38 to the button clamp. A stud 43, carried by the other arm of lever 40 engages a normally fixed abutment 47 when the button clamp is raised, whereby pin 37 is shifted to open the jaws. Abutment 47 is pivoted at 53 to a bracket 46 fixed by screws 45 to the machine frame, and is also connected by a pair of toggle links 48, 51 to bracket 46. A short link 48 abuts a stud 56, carried by abutment 47, in the over-centre position of the links. The longer link 51 is rigid with a lever arm 54. The armature 58 of an electromagnet 57 is normally held retracted by a spring 59, but is projected, when the electromagnet is energized, to rock lever arm 54 and thereby to break the toggle joint. If the button clamp is then lifted, stud 43 will rock the abutment about its pivot 53, and the clamp remains closed. When the electromagnet is de-energized, the weight of the abutment, assisted by a spring 60 at the pivot 53, carries the toggle links to their over-centre position. A bracket 29 on the button clamp carries a stud 28 disposed in a slot in a horizontal, clamp-lifting bar 18. The latter is fixed to a vertical bar 9 biased downwardly by a spring 27. A bar 20 projecting from bar 9 carries a pin 26. A lever 62 fulcrummed at 63 has one arm disposed under pin 26 and biased downwardly by a spring 75. The other arm of lever 62 is connected by a chain 67 to a treadle, operation of which serves to lift the button clamp. A lever 69, pivoted at 70, is connected by a link 73 to the starting lever 13 of the machine, whereby, when the latter operates, a notch 71 in lever 69 is positioned below a pin 68 on said other arm of lever 62, to prevent the raising of the button clamp.
