Abstract

871,983. Expansion joints ; butt joints. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. April 27, 1960 [May 28, 1959], No. 14694/60. Class 99(1). In a pipe expansion joint formed of plies of rubber and fabric reinforced by metal wires 17 are annular steel rings and including flanged cylindrical portions 10, 11 interconnected by a central arch portion 12, the flanges 13, 14 being provided with holes through which bolts B pass for securing the joint to flanged pipes P1, P2, a liner 19 of inert material such as polytetrafluoroethylene, extends through the joint and on to the outer surfaces of the flanges 13, 14 beyond the outer surfaces 20, 21 of the portions 10, 11 and terminate short of the bolt holes. Rigid metal discs 23, 24 are embedded in the flanges 13, 14 for transferring bolting pressure from retainer rings R to the liner 19 whereby a pressure tight seal is maintained between the liner and the pipe flanges. The discs, which may be split, extend inwardly beyond the surfaces 20, 21 of the portions 10, 11 and outwardly beyond the bolt holes.
