Abstract

1503372 Pipe joints BALLAST-NEDAM GROEP NV 10 Oct 1975 [18 Oct 1974] 41653/75 Heading F2G A butt joint between flanged 5 steel pipes incorporates a seal comprising an outer steel ring 9 to which is vulcanized and/or bonded an inner elastic natural or synthetic rubber ring 8 that projects unstressed beyond the sides of the steel ring 9, the steel ring 9 being held firmly between the flanged pipe ends at normal working temperatures, e.g. by tensioned bolts through holes 7 in the flanges 5, and the pipes having an internal diameter 50-100 times their wall thickness f. When held between the pipes the internal diameter of the rubber ring 8 is 101-105% of the internal pipe diameter; in the unstressed state the rubber ring 8 projects axially beyond the steel ring 9 by an amount sufficient to provide a seal even when the pipe flanges 5 are separated by the maximum temperature-induced amount.
