Abstract

763,665. Pipe couplings; repair collars. JEFFERY, H. S. and STOKES CASTINGS, Ltd. Oct. 27, 1955 [Oct. 27, 1954], No. 30957/54. Class 99(1) A sleeve for repairing broken pipes or for connecting a branch pipe comprises two semi-cylindrical parts 5 adapted to be clamped together, each part having a rib 11 the minimum diameter of which is equal to or slightly greater than the outside pipe diameter, the bore of the sleeve being enlarged outwards from and between the ribs at 13 and 14 respectively so as to be clear of the pipe and having a circumferential groove 15 at each end joined by longitudinal grooves or recesses 16, resilient material being fitted in the grooves 15, 16, to seal the joints at each end between the sleeve and the pipe and between the longitudinal mating surfaces of the two sleeve parts. The grooves are of square, oblong or non-rectangular cross-section, and the groove 16 is displaced radially relatively to the groove 15 so that only the. circumferential sealing material engages the pipe. The resilient material, preferably rubber, is in the form of a rectangular frame the ends being bent into a semicircular shape and the frame fitted into the grooves. The frame may be unitary or built up of separate parts secured together by adhesive or vulcanization; alternatively, separate strips may be used instead of a frame. Each rib 11 has a curved face 22 and a flat face 21 forming one face of a groove 15, the edge of the rib being cut away if necessary to fit irregularities on the pipe. Lead or cement may be injected into the relieved parts 14, and the parts 13 may be caulked with lead or cement and may be tapered as shown to retain the caulking material. One or both parts of the sleeve may have an integral branch or a tapped boss for fitting a branch pipe. The parts are clamped together by bolts 8 passing with clearance through square holes 7 in flanges stiffened by ribs 9; the clearance allows the sleeve to be used on pipes parts of which are laterally offset. Circumferential stiffening ribs 10 may be formed on the sleeve.
