Abstract

887,164. Pipe joints. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. May 13, 1958 [May 18, 1957], No. 15865/57. Class 99(1). An expansion joint for flanged pipes comprises an annular reinforced elastomeric member 5, Fig. 1, having flat end walls secured between flanges 1, 2, and clamping rings 6 by bolts 7 which are reduced at 9, for a length greater than the axial thickness of the wall to a diameter not greater than that of the holes in the wall, the bolts being releasably held in the wall with limited endwise movement relative thereto. The member 5 has reinforcement plies 11 of rubberized textile cord or metallic wire fabric e.g. cotton, rayon, nylon, which may be of the rubberized weftless type with the plies cut at a bias angle and having the bias of successive layers in alternate directions. The plies 11 may be passed round a bead wire 12. Sealing inserts 13, Fig. 2, with annular ridges 14 may be fitted to the clamping rings 6.. The heads of bolts 7 may be welded to rings 6 or studs may be close-fitted to holes in the rings 6 and fillet welded flush with the inner edge. The rings 6 may be formed from two or more segments of a ring and secured to the wall by bonding or by an adhesive and may have a recess 10 for securing the heads of bolts against rotation.
