Abstract

871,819. Strap fastenings. K.A.C. Ltd. Oct 18, 1957 [July 18, 1956], No. 22288/56. Class 44 A latch mechanism for connecting together in a releasable fashion two members comprises a socket 8 for attachment to one of the members to be connected and a plug element 1 for connection to the other such member, the plug element carrying at least one sliding latch bolt urged by spring means 10, 11 to a locking position and adapted automatically to interengage in the said socket to lock the plug element and socket together when the former is inserted into the latter and means 14 operable by a singlehanded rotary movement for positively withdrawing the said latch bolt or latch bolts as and when required. In the construction shown two latch bolts 2, 3 are provided these moving in opposite directions to engage openings 20 and 21 in the socket. The springs 10, 11 act between shoulders on the latch bolt and the bolts are withdrawn by a rectangular cam 12 which is located in D-shaped openings in the tails 4, 5 of the bolts. The cam is rotated by the means 14 which consists of a knob having an annular bush 15 screw threaded to the end of a spindle 13 which carries the cam 12 the bush being surrounded by a tubular casing 16 which is slidably mounted on the spindle 13 and between which and the bush is a spring 18 which normally urges the casing away from the bush so that a recess 20 engages a stop pin 19 on the plug 1. Hence before the cam can be rotated to withdraw the latch bolts the casing 16 must be moved against the pressure of the spring 18 so that the recess 20 is free of the stop pin 19. Three modifications of this construction are described, in the first the rectangular cam is replaced by a cam having slots which engages pins which are carried in longitudinal slots in the latch bolts. In the second the cam is replaced by a gear wheel which engages racks on the ends of the bolts. In the third the latch bolts are connected to a crosshead on the spindle 13 by means of links.
