869,431. Screwdrivers. NEILL & CO. (SHEFFIELD) Ltd., JAMES. Aug. 27, 1959 [Aug. 30, 1958], No. 27913/58. Class 61. A screw-holding screwdriver has an elongated permanent magnet fitted on or attached to the stem thereof, one end pole of the magnet being adjacent to the head of the screw engaged by the driving end of the stem. As shown, the tubular magnet 1 is slidable on the stem and is retained thereon by the flared driving end 4 and the handle 3. In a modification the tubular bore in the magnet is provided with longitudinal grooves to allow passage of the magnet over the flared end 4. In another modification two permanent magnets are each shaped along one side to fit against the sides of the screwdriver stem, the adjacent ends of the magnets being of like polarity. A resilient sleeve is applied around the magnets to retain them on the stem, the surfaces occupied by the sleeve being recessed to receive it. Instead of the sleeve, one or more rubber rings or a clip or wire coil may be used as a restraining means. In another modification the magnets are longitudinally grooved for application to a screwdriver with a flared end. In a further modification the magnets are longitudinally grooved to fit the round stem usual with a screwdriver for use with recessed head screws.
