Abstract

776,385. Spanners. HALL, S. 1. N. Jan. 18, 1955 [Jan. 25, 1954], No. 1470/55. Class- 61 In a spanner having a head 1 attached to a handle 3 and coupled to a sleeve 7 which is to be engaged round a nut or bolt, the spanner head 1 is provided at the side opposite the handle 3 with a number of sector shaped projections 5 and the sleeve 7 has circumferentially spaced recesses corresponding to the projections 5 of the spanner head 1 in such a manner that sleeves such as 13 (Fig. 5) having different cross-sections can be coupled to the same spanner head. The sleeve 7 is resiliently coupled to the spanner head 1 by means of a spring clip 9 which has one end mounted in one of the projections 5 of the spanner head and a free end portion lying partly within a groove 11 provided in a side wall of another projection 5 of the spanner head and partly in a semi-circular groove 12 in the sleeve 7. In a modification shown in Fig. 9 the sleeve is retained in position on the spanner head by means of a permanent magnet 16 mounted on the spanner head adjacent one of the sector-shaped projections 5.
