Class 50 In a method of briquetting pit coal or lignite without the use of a separate binder, coal pulverised to a grain size not greater than 3 mm. is passed from a hopper 1 through a feed device 2 into a fluidised bed conveyer or rotary furnace 3, where furnace or other inert gases entering at G heat the coal in 3-5 minutes to a temperature 25-50‹C below the softening point. The heated small coal passes through a line 7 to a mixer 8, whilst the heating gases taking with them 20-40% of the coal, in the form of dust, pass through line 4 to a cyclone separator 5, the gases leaving at K. The coal dust is heated in the infra-red radiator 6, electric furnace or other rapid heating device, to 30-50‹C above the softening point in not more than 5 seconds, after which it is mixed with the remainder of the coal in mixer 8 and passed to a briquetting press 9. If inert gases, other than furnace gases, are used to heat the coal in furnace 3, the gases may be continuously circulated from the cyclone separator 5 back to the furnace 3, a gas heater being interposed between them.
