Abstract

868,133. Impedance networks. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Oct. 11, 1957 [Oct. 18, 1956], No. 31785/57. Class 40(8) [Also in Group XL(a)] The characteristic impedance of a section of coaxial line is adjusted by varying the spacing between the conductors. This is done by means of a curved conductive lamina D, Fig. 1, which extends over the length L of the section and is hinged to a longitudinal pivot C arranged either on the outer or inner conductor and accessible for adjustment from outside the section. The section shown is short-circuited at one end by a conductive diaphragm E 2 and is provided at its input end with a further diaphragm E 1 which is connected to one of the conductors and spaced from the other by an annular gap. The lateral edges of the lamina D are shaped and disposed to form either a conductive or capacitative connection with the two diaphragms. Both diaphragms E 1 , E 2 are provided with a gap when the section is connected to transmission lines at both ends. More than one pivoted member may be used. Fig. 3 shows the extreme positions of adjustment of two laminae D 1 , D 2 hinged at C 1 , C 2 to an outer conductor of square section.
