Abstract

710,112. Impedance networks. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Aug. 11, 1952 [Aug. 10, 1951], No. 18885/51. Class 40 (8) A variable electric attenuator in which, over a range of frequencies, the attenuation is independent of frequency, comprises an input circuit which is mainly resistive over the range and a circuit connected to output which is mainly resistive over the range, there being variable mutual capacitative coupling between the two circuits. As shown the input circuit comprises resistor 4 of resistance R1, metal member 3 and the capacitance coupling Cl between member 3 and metal tube 1. Sliding inside tube 1 is a further metal tube 8 inside which lies a length of coaxial cable 9, the inner and outer conductors of which constitute the output terminals of the attenuator. The end 12 of the cable 9 has a cartridge type resistor 13 of resistance R2, connected between the inner and outer conductors of resistance equal to the characteristic impedance of cable 9. A further metal member 16 is connected to the inner conductor 14 and the capacity between the members 3 and 16 is varied by sliding tube 8 and the coaxial cable 9 connected to it, relative to the tube 1. The reactance of capacity C1 should be less than R1/7 and that of the capacity between member 16 and tubes 1 and 8 should be greater than 7R2 over the range of frequencies. Specific dimensions are given for an attenuator to be used in the range 50 to 120 megacycles per second.
