Abstract
867,132. Knitting-machines. BILLI, G. Feb. 13, 1959 [Feb. 14, 1958], No. 5014/59. Class 74 (2). As a yarn guide is raised to the inoperative position, its yarn is severed (as by an electrically heated wire 11, Fig. 3, an arc, or a mechanical cutter, Fig. 9), is sucked into a duct 8 and is there held out of the path of the needles until restoration of the yarn guide to its operative position brings the yarn into the path of the needles, which thereupon draw the free end of yarn out of the duct. The mouth of the duct is flattened and extends from the feed point to the knock-over region. The yarn from a guide being withdrawn passes under a tongue 12 on the duct and is thereby positively positioned for correct cutting and holding. When a yarn guide is re-introduced the yarn slips through the needles until the leading needle to take it is about to move out of the knitting sector; and the residual projecting end 10d of yarn is of such size as can be tolerated in the finished fabric. The mechanical cutter comprises a fixed blade 15 and a movable blade 16 raised by a cam 21 and lowered by a spring 22. A two-feed machine may have a relatively long-mouthed duct 24, with an interruption 27 in the length of the mouth and cutting resistances 28, 29 associated with the two sets 25, 26 of yarn guides. Alternatively, there may be provided two independent ducts which eventually enter a common conduit.
