[Class 74 (ii).] Relates to means for use in splicing stockings &c., functioning either to guide a withdrawn yarn to the cutter and binder or to cause an intermittently withdrawn yarn to avoid the cutter &c. and consequently to float. When a yarn lever 51 is elevated, the length of yarn passing to the last needle 52 taking yarn from it extends, as the needle reaches position 53, under a projection 43<1>, as shown in dotted lines. It is thus brought down into contact with the teeth of a loose plate 44 resting on the fabric. When the last needle gets to position 54 the yarn passes between cutting blades and under the clamping arm. When the pattern mechanism elevates the lever arm 17 to clamp and sever the yarn it also elevates plate 44 and brings it to rest by engagement with the arm 43. During knitting of a high splice or double sole, the plate 44 remains in elevated position a nd the floats 43 pass beneath it, being prevented by the arm 43 from rising above the binder plate 9.
