Abstract
634,237. Knitting-machines. HEMPHILL CO. July 29, 1947, No. 20440. Convention date, April 22, 1940. [Class 74 (ii)] An arcuate guide-member 25 is positioned between the normal binder plate 7 and the needles of a circular machine to guide an elastic or other yarn, fed from an individual feeder 22, below the binder plate, when it is desired to float this yarn, and so prevent it from becoming engaged in the trapping and severing device for the yarns fed from the normal feeders 1. A separate trapping and severing device is provided for the yarn fed from the feeder 22. The trapping and severing device for the feeders 1 is positioned on the binder plate 7 and comprises a member 9, which engages the yarn between its foot-portion 8 and the plate 7, an auxiliary member 11 which lightly holds the yarn when the number 9 is raised to secure another yarn, and a pair of cutters 14 for severing the yarns after they have been secured by the member 9. A notched rod 29 movable in a sleeve 30 positioned above the plate 7, serves to trap and sever the yarn fed from the feeder 22. When a feeder 1 is raised out of action and a fresh one is put into operation, the withdrawn yarn extends from the last needle on which it was knitted to the feeder across its trapping and severing device to be held inoperative. The guide-member 25 is secured to the plate 7 so that its lower edge is level with the lower edge of the plate 7 and the top edge is high enough to prevent the yarn e from the feeder 22, which is floating, from rising above the plate 7 and so being caught in the trapping and severing device for the feeders 1. When it is desired to sever the yarn e, the feeder 22 is raised so that its yarn extends across the top of the guide 25 and above the plate 7, at which height it is kept separate from the yarns in the trapping and severing device of the feeders 1, to be engaged by its severing device 29, 30. A notch 36 is provided in the member 11 to assist in guiding the yarn e into its trapping and severing device 29, 30.
