A furnace grate having an inclined front portion - viewed at the right of Fig. 2 - and a horizontal rear portion comprises a plurality of parallel bars R, Fig. 1, each of which has integral side walls Rs projecting therefrom and a head-piece L having a ledge portion Rk and an overhanging portion. The portion Rk of one bar is positioned beneath the overhanging portion of the adjacent bar to provide an air flow gap through which fuel on the grate is unable to pass. Each bar also has horizontal cooling-fins D, Rp, on opposite sides thereof forming pockets, the fins of one bar being located within the pockets on the adjacent bar so as to provide a sinuous air flow pass between each pair of adjacent bars.
