Abstract
Corrosion by hot water of an aluminium alloy containing magnesium and silicon is prevented by cladding the base alloy with an alloy consisting of Zn 0.5-6%; A1 and impurities the remainder, the impurities totaling not more than 0.15%. The base alloy may have the following composition: Mg 0.4-1.5%; Si 0.4-1.5%; A1 the remainder. Cu 0.1-0.5% and/or Cr 0.1-0.5% may also be present in the base alloy as may be a total of 0.25% of one or more of the following: Ti, Mo, Zr, Mn 0.05-0.25% each; B 0.001-0.1%. The duplex material may be heat treated by solution heating to 940-1050 DEG F quenching and ageing at 300-475 DEG F for 1-24 hours. Hot water tanks and pipe may be made from the duplex material.
