862,028. Stranding transposed multiple strip conductors. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDERS' CABLES Ltd. Aug. 5, 1959 [Aug. 5, 1958], No. 25057/58. Class 109. A planetary wire positioning head for positioning non-circular wires with their major crosssectional axes parallel to a fixed plane as the wires are drawn from a rotatable bobbin carrier along paths converging towards the axis of rotation of the carrier comprises a rotor mounted on the front end of the carrier so as to rotate therewith and having a flange provided with bores whose axes lie in planes containing the axis of rotation of the carrier and are inclined to that axis, a die-supporting tube carrying a die to position the wire being rotatable in each bore at the same angular speed as but in the opposite sense to the rotor. A boss 4 of a rotor 1 is keyed at 5 on to a shaft 2 of the bobbin carrier to rotate therewith. Rotatably mounted in bushes 7 in bores in a flange 6 of the rotor 1 are tubes 8 supporting dies 9 having apertures the size and shape of the wires. On each tube 8 is a pinion 22 meshing with a toothed ring 21 rotating with a toothed ring 12 driven to rotate relatively to the rotor 1 by gearing 19, 18 from a toothed ring 11 fixed to the rotor 1, the gear ratios being such that the pinions 22, and hence the dies 9, rotate once for each rotation of the rotor but in the opposite sense. A strip straightening device 27, Fig. 6, comprising two pairs of rolls 33, 34 on eccentric shafts for adjusting the clearance between the rolls is provided on each tube 8, and lubricating and cleaning devices such as felt pads or rollers may be arranged in front of the dies 9. The bearings 7 for the tubes 8 may be lubricated from a point 48 through a passage 49 to a recess 50, an extension 51 of the passage 49 lubricating the ring 12. By removing a grub screw 31 and collar 32, the tube 8, die 9 and associated parts can be removed rearwardly as a unit from the flange. A guard 52, Fig. 1, is mounted on a pedestal 14 to cover the toothed rings 11,12.
