Abstract

1403790 Drawing BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd 18 Oct 1973 [19 Oct 1972] 48281/72 Heading B3P A wire drawing machine comprises a series of dies and capstans for each of a plurality of wires 1-18, one capstan of each of the series being supported on a drive shaft 21- 28. Eighteen wires 1-18, e.g. Ag, Al, Au, Cu are each drawn vertically upwards or downwards through eight dies by eight ceramic ring drawing capstans having surface tapers of 0À5-5 degrees. The capstans for each drawing stage are mounted directly or by individual bearings on a drive shaft 21-28, all of which are supported by bearings 29, 30 and coupled together by gearing 56, the last drive shaft 28 being driven by a motor 59 via a belt 58. The gearing between the last two shafts 27, 28, for example, may be of variable ratio. The first die of each series is supplied from a manifold (60) (Fig. 2, not shown) with lubricant which is collected in a trough (63) below the last capstan. Lubricant from the drawn wires is stripped by air or steam jets (64). The machine is provided with sliding doors 66. After drawing, the wires may be passed to take up mechanisms or enamelling or annealing apparatus.
