[Class 83 (iv)] [Also in Group IX] A machine for winding wire and other long flexible articles on to a stationary block comprises a member which carries the wire &c., in a circular path round the block and winds it thereon, the wire passing from a point in line with the axis of the block outwards to the winding member and being drawn through a die which is rotated with the winding member on the said axis. As shown the die 13 is fixed in a holder 39 on a plate 37 at the end of a bracket 36 bolted to a pulley 5 driving a hollow shaft 4 on which a casing 3, carrying the winding member 16 is fixed. The wire passes from a guide 12, through the die 13 and shaft 4, to a guide pulley 14 mounted in bearings in an extension 32 of the shaft 4, and out through an aperture in the casing 3 to the winding member or guide pulley 16 and to the block 2 which is mounted on a shaft 29 geared by sun and planet gearing 7, 9, 8 to a sum-wheel 6 fixed to a stationary ring 10 on the fixed housing 17 so'that the block does not rotate. The die is mounted in a stationary casing or enclosure 41 and is lubricated from a pipe 42, the lubricating liquid passing through an outlet pipe 43 at the bottom of the casing ; the projecting bracket 36 permits the fixed casing 41 to be placed well clear of the machine. In a modification the winding member is carried by a support for the planet part of the sun and planet gearing, the support being mounted in bearings in a stationary casing having also bearings for the stationary shaft of the block which projects at one end of the casing while the bracket carrying the die projects from the other end of the casing ; the fixed sun-wheel of the sun and planet gearing is formed by an internal ring of teeth on the stationary casing and the gearing is located in the casing. In a further form the fixed sun-wheel is formed by an externally toothed ring mounted on an eatension bracket at one end of the stationary casing and the gearing is arranged between this extension bracket and the casing. According to the Provisional Specification, chain gearing may be arranged between the stationary block and a chain wheel fixed to a bracket within which a short hollow shaft on the casing carrying the winding member is journalled.
