Abstract
778,827. Measuring continuous lengths. ENTWISTLE CO., J. L. April 26, 1955, No. 12051/55. Class 42 (2). Apparatus for measuring the length of wire comprises a support 8 having a central opening, and three parallel shafts 31 journalled in the support and spaced around the opening ; on each shaft 31 is journalled a bracket 17 carrying a measuring wheel 20, the three wheels 20 being pressed against the wire W. Each wheel is connected to shaft 31 by bevel gearing. Each shaft 31 carries a pinion 34, the three pinions being geared together by a ring gear 35 which is held floatingly between the pinions and is held against axial displacement by nylon or other washers mounted on each side of each pinion. One of the shafts 31 is connected to a counter. A projection on each bracket 17 carries a roller 40 engaging between projections 41 on a ring member 42, so that wheels 20 move towards or away from wire W in unison. The wheels are pressed against the wire by a tension spring 48 acting on a projection 47 on one of the brackets 17. By inserting a rod in a hole 51 of a bracket 17 and rotating the bracket, all the wheels may be retracted in order to permit insertion of wire. A guide wheel 45 for the wire is provided.
