Apparatus for twisting together a plurality of strands or threads to form a cable comprises a flyer 20 having two hollow coaxially aligned stub shafts 6,19 through which the strands 18 pass and a reel 4 rotatably mounted in a stationary floating from 3; the reel is adapted to be driven from one of the stub shafts 6 through a variable speed gear unit 2 so that the linear speed of the cable remains in constant proportion to the rotary speed of the flyer as the reel 4 progressively fills. The gear unit 2 may be controlled by means of a feeler sensing the diameter of the winding on the reel or alternatively by means of an electrical, mechanical or electronic unit 17 which is sensitive to the linear input speed of the strands 18.
