Abstract

1,244,261. S-Z twisting. SIEMENS A.G. 25 April, 1969 [21 May, 1968], No. 21371/69. Heading D1T. [Also in Divisions B3 and H1] Pairs or quads 2 are stranded together to form a communications cable having alternate sections of S and Z twist by drawing them through a die 9 which forms them into a group 1, through a twisting device 4 which presses on the group and rotates about the axis thereof, and to a rotating take-up drum 5, the distance a between the die 9 and the mid-point of the twisting device 4 being greater than the distance b between the mid-point of the twisting device 4 and the drum 5, there being a plurality of complete 360‹ twists in any length a + b of the resultant cable, and each section of one direction of twist having a length of at least b but not more than 3a. In place of the take-up drum, several cables 1 may pass to a die whereafter they are twisted together to form a larger cable (Fig. 3, not shown). The ratio a:b is preferably at least 5. The twisting device may be intermittently driven in one direction or its direction of rotation may be periodically reversed. The device may also be moved during twisting to vary the ratio a:b. The speed of the twisting device may be varied to give a uniform lay throughout a section. More than one twisting device 4 may act on the cable between the die 9 and the drum 5, the devices rotating in the same directions at speeds which increase with their distance from the die 9. Various suitable twisting devices are described (Figs. 5 to 8, not shown).
