Abstract

1428130 Making telephone cables CORTINOVIS SpA and TELEPHONE CABLES Ltd 3 Oct 1973 [4 Oct 1972] 45841/72 Heading DIT An apparatus for the manufacture of telephone cable comprises a plurality of double twist twinning machines 12, Fig. 1, each machine 12 having a bobbin cradle carrying a pair of supply bobbins for wire to be twinned, and a stranding cage arranged for rotation about said bobbin cradle on a generally upright axis to cause the wires to be twinned; and a closing machine 1, 2, 3 or 4 receiving the twinned wires directly from the twinning machines 12 and laying the twinned wires together to form a cable; the twinning machines 12 being arranged adjacent one another in a horizontal row, such as any one of rows 5 to 11, each twinning machine 12 being arranged to be driven in synchronism with its associated closing machine 1, 2, 3 or 4 at a speed determining the angle of lay. As shown, a plurality of rows 5 to 11 may be arranged to feed one or more closing machines 1 to 4 without the interposition of any intermediate capstan or haul off wires. If a machine 1 is aligned with a row 6 it can receive twinned wires from an odd number of rows, for example rows 5 and 7. If a machine 2 is intermediate two rows, for example rows 7 and 8, it can receive twinned wires from an even number of rows, for example rows 7 and 8 or rows 6, 7, 8 and 9. The supply bobbins are mounted on horizontal cantilevers that can present their free ends to the spaces between the rows 5 to 11 to facilitate bobbin changing by an operative. Each twinning member 12 comprises four bobbin cradles, each cradle having a pair of supply bobbins for wire to be twinned, there being a common drive for the four cradles. The rows 5 to 11 may each comprise an odd number of machines, the odd number being made up by a single machine 13 arranged on the central axis of the row at the end adjacent the closing machine 1 to 4.
