Abstract

1,255,947. Coiling helices; making springs. NHK SPRING CO. Ltd. 16 Dec., 1968, No. 59613/68. Headings B3A and B3E. Apparatus for feeding and coiling a spring wire 112 comprises a rotatable mandrel 102, a reel device 30 having a reel supporting member 105 horizontally mounted in a casing 104 so as to rotate about shafts 109 and 110, a reel assembly 107 mounted on the supporting member 105 and rotatable about a shaft 111 disposed perpendicularly to the shafts 109, 110, a guiding passage 106 passing through the casing, the supporting member and the shaft on the side adjacent the mandrel, and a mechanism 108 for rotating the reel device about the shafts 109, 110 whereby the wire 112 is twisted before it is wound on to the mandrel. In operation the leading end of the wire is connected to the mandrel 102 and the mandrel rotated to wind the wire so that adjacent turns are in close contact with each other. Since the wire is drawn by the mandrel, the reel 107 is rotated around the shaft 111 and the rotatable supporting member 105 is then rotated around the axis of shafts 109 and 110 in a gear ratio determined by the gear train of mechanism 108. As a result, the coiling wire is twisted before it is wound on to the mandrel and an initial tension is imparted to the wire.
