[Also in Group XXXV] A detachable end bell S, Fig. 2 serving to close the open end 18 of a motor driven refrigerant compressor 1 and through which a crankshaft 21 projects comprises a bearing B for said crankshaft, an annular cup member 26 for sealing the crankcase 25 and a suction inlet chamber 27 in open communication with the suction manifold 14 of the compressor 1. As shown the crankshaft projects through a sealing member 34 in the bell S and is coupled to the motor 2 but in a modification the bell H, Fig. 7 provides an hermetic housing for the motor 61. Thus a given compressor may be adapted for operation either by an open motor as shown in Fig. 2 or by a hermetically sealed motor as shown in Fig. 7 in which case refrigerant gas is drawn through filters 76 in the suction inlet chamber 72, and through passages 68 cut internally of a cylindrical portion 52 of the bell H and separated by lands 67 for supporting the motor stator 66 and through passages 58 to the suction manifold 14. Refrigerant gas also traverses gaps 70 between the rotor 61 and stator 66. The other end of the crankshaft 21 is carried in a bearing 19 in the end wall 10 of the crankcase 25 and has a conventional lubricant passage 31.
