Abstract

859,180. Tubular lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. May 28, 1959 [June 5, 1958], No. 18005/58. Class 39(2). A double-ended tubular lamp having a cylindrical end cap rigidly secured to each end with its axis in line with the axis of the tubular envelope and designed to be held in a holder of the type which grips the periphery of the cap, each end cap includes in its external surface a part which is a zone of a sphere having a diametral plane substantially perpendicular to the axis of the lamp. The lamp shown consists of a tungsten filaments 2 supported by tantalum spacers 3 in a tube 1 of fused silica, the ends of the filament being connected by strips of molybdenum foil sealed into the ends of the tube, to wires 5 ending in spade connecters 6. The seals and the inner ends of the wires 5 are enclosed in end caps 4 having a cylindrical portion 7 and a part-spherical portion 8 which in use is gripped by the holding device for the lamp, the part-spherical portion allowing for any misalignment of the end caps without placing the tube under stress.
