Abstract

859,097. Contacting gases with liquids. PILO, C. W. March 31, 1958 [May 23, 1957], No. 10198/58. Class 55 (2). [Also in Group XIII] Apparatus for heat exchange by direct contact between a gas and a liquid comprises a rotatable member 15 in a gas-tight housing 10, plates 21 rigidly fixed to the rotatable member to form portions of spirals in plan view and to form passageways of constant width throughout their length through which the gas passes, and sprays 14 to distribute the liquid over the plates. The gas is drawn in through inlets 11 by the rotary action of the member 15 which is sealed at 18 to the housing so that the gas is constrained to traverse the passageways between the plates in counter flow to the water passing over them and then through outlet 12. The sprays may be rotated and a water drain 16 is provided. The plates may have projections 22 or may be perforated.
