Abstract

1,084,794. Contacting gases with liquids. TISSMETAL LIONEL-DUPONT, TESTE & CIE. Aug. 31, 1964 [Sept. 26, 1963], No. 35508/64. Heading B1R. A gas/liquid contact column comprises superposed contact stages each containing a packing unit or units composed of vertically arranged corrugated sheets separated by plain sheets adjacent stages being separated by a by a plate 20 which collects all the liquid descending the column and re-distributes it through holes 23 over the packing in the stage below. Preferably pairs of corrugated sheets are arranged between adjacent plain sheets and the material of the plain sheets may be pervious or impervious to fluids and may have roughened surfaces or comprise a catalytic material. A number of assembled corrugated and plain sheets may be wound spirally to form a packing unit, or the sheets may be in the form of concentric cylinders. The upper and lower edges of the plain sheets in a unit may be serrated. The lower edges of the plain sheets in a packing unit may project below those of the corrugated sheets and the upper edges of the corrugated sheets in a packing unit may be project above those of the plain sheets. The plate or plates 20 may be secured to flanges secured to the inner wall of the column as shown in Fig. 7 or between the flanges of sections of the column which are bolted together, Fig. 8, (not shown).
