858,418. Cable railways. FOERDERANLAGEN E. HECKEL G.m.b.H. FUER. Jan. 25, 1957 [April 23, 1956; June 29, 1956; July 20, 1956], No. 2717/57. Class 103(4). In a passenger-carrying cable railway the interiors of the coaches 1 and the terminal mountain stations 11 are maintained at a pressure equal to the atmospheric pressure at ground level. The coaches are generally of egg or spherical shape to withstand changes in the external pressure, and centrally of each coach there is a vertical tubular shaft 2 in the form of an air-tight casing having a door, not shown, along its length opening into the coach and upper and lower doors 5, 4 communicating with the outside. The arrangement is such that, in an emergency, the casing 2 will constitute an air-lock, there being means, including compressed air containers 6, for regulating the pressure within the coach. Other air-lock chambers are provided on the platforms 18, 19 of the terminal station 11, said chambers being sealed by doors 16, 17, so that when a coach reaches the platform 19 say, the coach is secured thereto, with the interposition of a sealing tube 23, by clamping members 22, and the pressure at the platform is then increased, from a control room 21, to the pressure within the coach and station before the coach door 24 and the door 17 are opened.
