Abstract

1302699 Automatic shutter mechanism BRITISH OXYGEN CO Ltd 30 April 1970 [2 May 1969] 22505/69 Heading E2M A shutter 14, slidable between a first position wherein an associated aircraft window 4 is at least partially unobstructed and a second position wherein any flow of air through the window is prevented, is automatically movable from the first to the second position in the event of the window breaking by a mechanism actuable by the pressure differential between the inside and outside of the window. As shown, the shutter 14, slidable on a roller 18 in a guide rail 12 between inner and outer windows 8 and 6, has its lower end connected to a cord 20 anchored at the other end and passing over pulleys 22 connected to a piston 26 of a pneumatic ram 24. The bottom of the ram is connected to the cabin 10, and the top, via a pipe 42, to the atmosphere; a valve 30 controls the pipe 42 and is controlled in turn by a spring biased valve 32. The pipe 42 has a small bleed to the cabin 10. The track 12 may be curvilinear. A latch is provided to hold the shutter in said second position. The device may also be operated by gravity, a spring, gas or an explosive charge.
